To be Emo.
What does it mean to be Emo? Is Emo merely a style, or is it a manifestation and outlet of intrinsically negative feelings? Why is it such a stigma, and why are the practitioners of this particularity discriminated against with such vehement fervor?
Emo is a subculture with both a distinctive appearance and stereotyped behavioral attributes. Emo’s are said to wear tight clothes, most notably skinny jeans and band t shirts. Their clothing is generally dark. It’s common for males to wear makeup. Emo’s have a distinctive type of hair. Usually jet black and shoulder length with asymmetrical bangs. The back is subject to variable lengths, while the front is almost always past the tip of the nose and usually extends to the chin. Emo’s are said to be depressed and sad. A common phrase, “cheer up Emo kid”(It’s sister phrases being “go cry Emo kid” and “Go cut yourself Emo kid”) is used to express their sad, timid behavior. Emo’s are also said to cut themselves or self-harm in other ways.
To be Emo usually implies a level of aesthetic ambiguity, which a lot of teenagers and young adults find attractive. There’s something alluring and sexual about the dark side. Emo’s are for the most part, hygienic individuals, and maintain their appearance by taking care of their skin, hair, and bodies. The males are often prejudiced against for being so hygienic, which is a punishable offense in the eyes of the average teenage male. The males are also discriminated against for appearing feminine. It’s common for a male Emo to be called a female due to their long hair and thin bodies.
For their feminine appearance, the males are often assaulted with words such as fag, faggot, queer, and homo. Insulting others is fun to the general public, and Emo’s are an easy target. Usually they refrain from retaliation and resort to writing and self-harm(see “Knives and Pens” – Blackveil Brides). Often they are pushed to suicide because of bullying. The general consensus is that Emo kids are “posers” because they look similar. This logic overlooks the fact that most humans buy their clothing from outlet stores, and therefore look similar to an exceptionally larger multitude of people than do Emo’s. Most teens embrace a style, hipsters, ballas, thugs, country, prep, jock, gothic. So why is this style of dress most likely to be criticized? Because they’re least likely to retaliate. Because there are more participants of the other styles than the Emo style, and therefore one is superior of course. The world runs on faulty logic, without it we’d cease to exist.
